I love Bridges, which is awesome because I live in the city of bridges. The imagery is almost cliche and I refuse to cave in to neohipsterness of entropy, but instead embrace the unimaginable bliss of being around when three new bridges are being put in.

Pumalogy began as an art concept brewing mediatic ideas in a mountain kitchen at the base of a remote sacred volcano. The concept morphing like a caterpillar, got experience from NYC, and then went back to the West Coast because that is where wild hearts lay.

So the cat gears are turning at the base the new Home Dome, the Volcano called Hood, and three new bridges will span PDX's map. Many more are crossing the mind gap. Of course there are professional pursuits that take up some of the time here but, a project is in the works.

I can't wait to put bridges side by side, from nothingness to access and once it is done. It will be there. Now is the time.

I am so sad at the news of Steve Jobs passing into the next realm. I did not know you, but was affected by your bold sensibility all my life. After rekindling my passion for art in College, the MAC became my brush. Thanks to you, technology became beautiful; you gave sway to simplicity, efficacy, making power accessible to the people! What was done for millions in a post-studio in LA could be done at home or in the Mac-lab I worked in. I have lived with your motto of death/life, living to the fullest, with somewhat less success, but with the conviction that the dots will connect. And by God they do. I truly believe you are a messenger of beauty in the realm of Nicholas Roerich and Einstein. You somehow made tangible the organic nature of machines. Sunset Climb

The summer is flowing by like the Columbia. Portland town of two rivers is taking little crafts into her folds. Sailboats using the wind that comes out of the gorge, big ships loading up on supplies, all which sooth your eyes as a child's welcome. Portland, she smiles big for you then quickly runs off into her world, knowing you are looking on, proud. This is my home , she knows.

She knows you are back in town for a bit. To and from places of work. Flying in and out of PDX for a climb, driving up the Cascades to teach and down 84 for fun.

I just got back from work and had one of those awesome moments driving over the Columbia river through the East side and back to the krizzeling Sellwood neighborhood. I was stoked because I love this place.

I was also stoked because we climbed up to the summit of Rainier in the afternoon, in time for a Sunset Climb. It may have been one the sweetest guiding trips in while. The light was intense if soft, reflecting off the sound defining it past the layers of moisture, against the rain forest. We all made it. Looking out, dazed in the moment, time froze and hustled us back down.

Then the climb turned to darkness. First the shadow of the immense volcanic cone rose from her base, growing eastward as the sun set. It grew into infinity and suddenly was gone. The sun now behind the horizon glowing dusk around the steep icy slopes. We continued our descent while light faded away. The giant crevasses dimming from blue to gray, and for the last portion before we reached safety, the full darkness of a new moon enveloped us.
Only beams of light from our headlamps pierced the void until our shelters appeared. Had we waited one evening, the storm would have rolled in. You never know.

So thank you all, team VA, for being on this miniature expedition, for making the dynamic excellent. And a shout to my colleagues, Stuart, Lakpa and Victor.

I am at the Roadhouse, a classic Alaskan Guesthouse and bakery, and we are waiting to fly onto the glacier. It's too early for beers and too late for breakfast. The waiting game is excruciating because your are mentally preparing for a twenty day expedition but your just have to sit in civilian clothes , hurry up and wait!

There are many miniature application out there! And I find alot of them clever, rarely using most and I certainly will not live without a rare few. But please don't interpret this post as a gear review. Because to me gear is just a bunch of stuff I love too much. Instead, indulge in my mentioning of this surprising product.
The Mammut Gear Check App is sweet! Especially for me, who has been known to omit an item or two from my pack. I am, also, too used to packing to actually make my own list. And, I'd forget sh*t on it anyway. So what I thought would be a gadget, is in fact a sweet "pilot's check list" for mountaineering!

The list is complete, thorough and accurate. You can customize it to your specific climb, and shave off what you beleive to be excessive. I have not tried the team sharing thing, but I can easily view what I don't have check and assign responsibility for various team gear.

The bottom line is that I am getting ready for another Denali expedition and have already countless Rainier Trips scheduled. With this awesome check-list, I will never again forget my floss or climbing boot :)

Mountain essence in simple words

It is a rare day between or above a weather system. A time at odds with data, confirming the reality of possibility. Today we are climbing, but unbeknownst to ourselves at the time we did not proceed to the summit, but instead we met an extraordinary character. Perched on a ledge he had an appointment with death. And death, this old man, dressed in different suits depending on the occasion, met us. He stayed a while bid us farewell and until next time. We all have an appointment. We want to forget, but it is good not to.

Words, simple shelter of the interfacing mind, go beyond meaning, words shift ideas into shapes,

Massive Avalanche at Mount Hood Meadows

A massive event slide into Heather Canyon. It released on its own early in the morning of March 11th. It is hard to visualize the size of it from the crown, but the fact that it slid to bare ice over a half-mile wide swath gives you an indication of the amount of energy released.

The flow of powder and rock hard snow chunks slid right past Heather Canyon Lift.

The tongue of the avalanche went into the narrows filling the valley with at least 30 feet of snow.

When compared to a human the slide could be mistaken for a glacier.

The Subaru's last mission

I will have to write a short story about the life of my Subaru. She has seen many friends and places. She has gone across the country twice, romped down dirt roads at 70 mph, and even got stuck in the snow in Massachusetts and in the Olympics in Washington. But this beast, starting her life in Tahoe, tearing through empty Alpine Meadows parking lots at night, on major storm days, showed what she had; an appetite for snow.

While her recent trip to the Wallowa's in Eastern Oregon was not her last mission, at 282 000 miles it is one of her last hurrah's! She headed into the storm, hung out at a yurt in feet of powder then trekked up a gnarly dirt road covered in fresh snow to get us into one of the most remote regions of Backcountry Skiing. She got us out, and back to PDX.
She has been good to me. Thank you!

Amazingly I am back on firm land. The movement of the ocean drifted away like the tide and only the memory of the cold gnarly north Pacific remains. I feel like I returned from war. Our mission was catch fish, and lord be my witness we caught fish. I feel like I went to war because I don't really want to remember, and as a matter of fact I don't even know what to write about.

Is it normal to feel awkward in a public setting? Is it normal to miss it? Is it normal for your body to hurt everywhere? This body of mine f-king sailed the Bering Sea, bore the abuse of insane foremen and obeyed the command of very experienced skippers.

What the hell is an intellectual Swiss born artist and mountaineer doing on such a vessel? I asked myself this everyday. I was after money, stories and the lure of the remotest places on earth. I got the most Buddhist lesson you could get amongst crazed christians. We were like Jesus on steroids and gave the faithful something real to fear.

But rules are sometimes broken and the following visual piece is truly inspiring! I you are pursuing your dream, and have doubt, this piece will revitalize your soul. I believe in the pursuit of the soul, and it is a difficult endeavor at times. But I would never trade it in for anything. The "dark side of the lens" is why. On a more intellectual note, this short film symbolize the beginning of something new. Profound though, amazing images and adventure sports come together. You can't even call it extreme sports or adventure, rather they are a practice. It is a practice in the zen sense that involves a dance with the elements. And when great meaning gets expressed in the most artful way you have a stunning inspiration.

I delved into my archives because I am working with a film crew from New York City. I love New Yorkers, they are smart funny and not too caught up on looks. Even when you're shooting a fashion event. It is more about the art. There is an ephemeral culture that bleeds in between each other. I'd say consciousness is shared, blurring the concrete boundaries we have defined for our bodies. For example if your group of friends and coworkers have a certain world view, let's say they love Sarah Palin, you might adopt some conservative ideas where the sphere of your awareness crosses over with others. And in a very dense city you are constantly close and near the most creative ideas. So much so that your taste is acute but you take it for granted. Because you don't see it as separate. That's why when you go to a small town art is shitty, and when you work with New Yorkers you feel a rush of hurried and cutting energy.

At the end of June 2010 only one group got out of camp. The wind got increasingly worse throughout the day forcing group after group to return after attempting to descend. You know it's bad when you can't go down.

Willie Prettie, Alpine Ascents International's lead Guide, was looking for a way, and a break in the wind to see if was possible to go down. Out there while everyone else was huddled in their tents, Willie looked like a Yellow Denali Yeti.
